Katherine High School teacher and NT Simpson Prize coordinator Charleen Conroy is encouraging Year 9 and 10 students to enter the Simpson Prize and NT Chief Minister’s Anzac Spirit Study Tour.
“The Simpson Prize is a national essay writing competition aimed at Year 9 and 10 students and it looks at the significance of Anzac Day and what it means to them,” she said.
“I hope they’ll all have a good go at entering the competitions.
“And that they’ll have a passion and be inspired to study history and uncover the voices of the past.”
It will be 100 years since the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in France, on April 25, 2018.
Students are invited to write a creative piece, exploring the relationship between Australians and the people of Villers-Bretonneux.
Fifteen students and three chaperones will then be selected to visit Villers-Bretonneux as part of the NT Chief Minister’s Anzac Spirit Study Tour.
NT Simpson Prize winner and Palmerston Senior College student Finlay Day spoke with Katherine students about his trip to the Western Front.
“I don’t think there are any cons to entering,” he said.
“It’s the trip of a lifetime.”
After hearing the presentation, Georgina Harley was one of the students considering entering the competitions this year.
Miss Harley said although she hadn’t entered previously, she enjoyed history and essay writing.
