Students at Jilkminggan and Timber Creek schools are set to rev up their circus skills as trainers from Brisbane’s world-renowned contemporary circus company Circa roll into town to deliver fun-filled circus workshops.
The trainers will work with the young people in each community on their juggling, hula hooping, tricks, flicks and kicks before they travel to see Circa’s professional company perform in Troppo at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre in Katherine on Sunday at 6pm.
Audiences will have a chance to see everything the students have learned as they give a curtain raiser performance ahead of the main show.
After Katherine, the trainers will travel to Alice Springs to deliver workshops with Tangentyere Council.
“The students are looking forward to having a great time with the team from Circa and ACCOMPLICE - even better to show their skills at the presentation in Katherine,” Timber Creek’s principal Jedda Trueman said.
“It’s a great opportunity for the students to experience something new, make friends, get fit, learn new skills and build self-confidence.
“Our local communities and families will be astounded by their children’s skills and confidence when taking on the challenge of working with Circa.”
Jilkminggan principal Jess Robinson said “It’s really fantastic that the student are able to engage in something that is an outlet for them”.
“Our students are active and love the outdoors, so it’s exciting for them to have professionals come into the school and support them to hone their skills in a safe way,” Ms Robinson said.
“Some of our students have never been to Katherine or even left the community, so for them to go to see the performance in Katherine – it’s life changing for them.
“For our students to meet and learn from people who are so amazing in their field, for Circa to come out and work with our students – it’s a big deal for us.”
The workshops have been funded by the Regional Arts Fund and ACCOMPLICE and supported by Katherine Regional Arts, Tangentyere Council and Central Car Rentals.
