Victorian trainer Neil Dyer pulled a rabbit out of his hat after his gelding beat some more more fancied rivals to win the 2017 Katherine Cup today.

The eight-year-old Mywordsaidthebird will have its name engraved on the Cup after chasing down some some early front runners to take the 1700 metre feature race today and scoop up the $20,100 first prize plus paying almost $6 for on course bets.

Mr Dyer also won the trainer’s prize for the best performance across the six races.

“This will be going home now to Echuca-Moama,” Mr Dyer said after lifting the cup.

He paid tribute to female jockey Vanessa Arnott for taking up the Cup ride at late notice and steering her charge home for the win.
