Our website cranked over more than half a million page views for August, a record.
Page views are a key measurement of digital traffic – the August result means the equivalent of the entire population of the Northern Territory read at least two stories on our site.
Probably not, one person would have looked at a number of stories and photos but that’s why we use another digital stat called unique browsers to see we are connecting with our audience better than any other time in our history.
In a month or two we will have clocked up 10,000 followers on our Facebook site, not bad for a town which had a population of 11,118 at the last census.
A good chunk of that population aren’t even old enough to be on Facebook yet.
Compared with other media outlets of our size we are punching well above our weight.
We know because we check.
That is because of you.
Many Katherine people still love their weekly paper. Thank you for your ongoing support for our print edition.
You want local news and that’s what you will continue to get.
The same goes for our website.
We look at your comments, our numbers, so we give you more of what you want – and better.
We work hard to keep pace with the latest digital storytelling techniques with the support of our parent company, Australian Community Media, and its vast experience, including access to our digital journalist Melody Labinsky, who recently spent a few weeks here as acting Editor.
Our live blog from the council elections on the weekend was a first, our livestreaming of council meetings is a Territory first, our online weekly summation of news events is a first.
We are not scared to have ago – some things work, and some don’t.
Those that don’t work we drop like a hot spud and the others we work to make better.
We are planning improvements to our website, to sharpen and smarten the way we deliver the news to your smartphone, tablet or laptop.
All this focus on technology does not mean we don’t push hard on the big stories, we do.
The Katherine Times has been relentless on the PFAS water contamination issue, don’t take our word for it, ask about.
We hope you are proud of what we are doing, we are doing it to better connect to you, to give you a powerful voice, even out here on the edge of the Never Never.
If you are not impressed then tell us, we are listening and learning.
