The former St John Ambulance station, adjacent to the Victoria Highway, is also located next door to Kintore Street School.
The Department of Education told Katherine Times this week it had been “in discussions” with the Department of Health at officer level for the past month.
“We have in principal agreement that the former St John’s Ambulance site is not presently in use,” a government spokeswoman said.
“Accordingly we are preparing a proposal for the Department of Health to consider that the site is used for educational purposes.”
Kintore Street Special School opened in 1988.
The school caters for students with physical and intellectual impairments from Pre-school to year 12 (age range 3.5 to 20 years).
The school continues to grow and this year started a modified NTCE (NT Certificate of Education).
