One of the NT’s biggest shires – covering an area of 168,277 square kilometres – the municipality is home to about 6000 people with a very small rate base.
Most of the councillors have to travel massive distances to attend meetings with the council’s headquarters, like Roper Gulf, in Katherine.
The council has struggled in recent years with the NT Government to win more funding.
Brian Pedwell has been re-elected Mayor of the council.
Mayor Pedwell is from Yarralin, an Aboriginal community west of the Victoria River Downs cattle station, where he works as an Aboriginal health practitioner.
