The Healing Foundation’s Stolen Generations Reference Committee chairwoman Florence Onus met with Aboriginal Elders from Katherine this morning.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet all the Elders and have a yarn about their needs and talk about some of the local initiatives,” Ms Onus said.
“It is also an opportunity to talk about what is happening nationally and give an overview of the Bringing Them Home 20 Years On report, which we delivered to the Prime Minister and Bill Shorten at the end of May.”
The report details how Australia’s aging Stolen Generations are still struggling with the impacts of unresolved trauma, and need a new policy approach to assist them and their families to heal.
A particular focus in the report is “a full analysis of the Stolen Generations changing needs as they age”.
Ms Onus said today’s meeting in Katherine would lay the ground work for future policy conversations.
“It is important to engage and update the Stolen Generations group in Katherine about what has been going on since we handed the report to the Prime Minister,” Ms Onus said.
