The hub will provide support and dignity services, such as use of shower and a washing machine, to break down barriers that prevent people from accessing support.
Based at the Salvation Army in Katherine Terrace, the hub will also work with a host of other community groups to provide case management and easier access to services.
Doorways Hub coordinator Harley Dannatt said the hub would operate as a “one stop shop”.
“An idea for this multi-purpose collaborative space has been around for at least three years in Katherine,” Mr Dannatt said.
“The Katherine Accommodation Action Group put a drop-in centre as a priority, and last year the Salvation Army put their hand up to be the lead agency.”
Mr Dannatt said there was a lot of excitement about the hub’s official opening next Tuesday.
Katherine’s homeless population is more than twice the Northern Territory average and 31 times the national average rate.
“Katherine does not have a homeless shelter but we have enormous rates of homelessness,” Mr Dannatt said.
“This will support healthy living for people who do not have a home. People will be able to wash themselves and their clothes.
“Homeless people are a part of our community so this space will be a place where everyone is welcome and can engage with one another,” he said.
“We are hoping to use the space as a meeting place. It is about belonging.”
Damien Sailor began work today as a volunteer at the drop-in centre.
“I thought I would be able to help out. I make the toast and tea in the mornings and have been making some washing kits,” Mr Sailor said.
Housing minister Gerry McCarthy announced $400,000 over two years for the Katherine pilot program in May.
“These pilot programs aim to reduce homelessness, prevent people ending up on the street by providing accommodation and support people to transition into long-term living arrangements,” Mr McCarthy said.
The hub will be accessed from Giles Street.
