The mini pies were in such high demand, the store ran out of free pies by 10.30am.
Katherine’s CBD halted to a stand still from 9am as workers abandoned their desks and tools to pick up a free pie.
National fast food chain Pie Face celebrated the opening of its first outlet in the NT by giving away free pies for two hours to anyone from 9am.
It was chaos as Katherine residents lined up to get their hands on a hot pie.
“I am really excited to see so many people in the store,” operations manager Satish Meka said.
“We have 250 mini pies ready to go and another delivery arriving later today.”
Katherine Mayor Fay Miller said the new store was a welcome addition to Katherine.
“It is great for locals, great for tourists and a really great entry into the town,” Mayor Miller said.
A group of about 10 workers from Kalano abandoned their posts to be the first people to taste a pie.
“This is a one time thing, this will never happen again so we had to come,” one worker said.
The team from LJ Hooker took an early smoko to join in on the fun.
“We are very excited – anything for free food,” one worker said.
Pie Face is a major part of the official opening of the new United Petroleum’s service station in Katherine, right next to the Katherine high level bridge.
Katherine is the first community in the NT to have a Pie Face outlet.
Pie Face is a fast food outlet specialising in take away handmade meat pies with dozens of franchise outlets along the east coast of Australia.
