All the ingredients are expected to be in place for showers and storms across the western Top End on Christmas Day, but whether any storms reach Darwin will depend on the direction the steering winds on the day, the Bureau of Meteorology said today.
In Alice Springs, it will be hot (low 40Cs), with a slight chance of a shower or storm.
Katherine will reach a top of about 35 degrees with storms possible.
“Will see more showers and storms for the Darwin region towards the end of this week, followed by a quieter weekend and picking up again on Monday.
“Weather patterns can change very fast at this time of the year in the tropics and our forecasters will be working 24/7 during the Christmas break,” a bureau spokesman said.
The hottest Christmas Day on record in Alice Springs was 42.5C in 1972, the coolest was 24.1C in 2006
