A police dog helped sniff out drugs during a random car search at Mataranka overnight.

Detectives from the Central Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and officers from the Katherine Dog Operations Unit have arrested a 62-year-old man after finding a quantity of amphetamine during a traffic stop near Mataranka last night.
The man was stopped by police and his vehicle was subjected to a search by a drug detector dog.
During the search, police located approximately 35 grams of methamphetamine.
He was arrested and taken to the Katherine Police Station where he was charged with Possess Trafficable Quantity of Schedule 1 Drug and Supply Schedule 1 Drug.

“Police are dedicated to preventing these dangerous drugs from being supplied to our community,” said Katherine Division Acting Superintendent Dave Hamlyn.
“The damage these drugs do to our community is well documented and detectives will continue to actively detect drug traffickers.”
The 62-year-old has been remanded in custody and will appear in the Katherine Local Court.
