Katherine Town Council will employ the coordinator with $360,000 provided over three years from the NT Government's Local Government Special Purpose Grants announced today.
The coordinator will run the Big Rivers Region Waste Management Working Group.
Katherine council is a member of the group along with Roper Gulf, Victoria Daly and West Daly regional councils.
"Whereas resources can be limited and distances too large to overcome when regarding individual cases, collaboration with the region and sharing of resources changes the impossible into feasible projects," the group says.
The government has been funding this position for some years.
Roper Gulf Regional Council will receive $200,000 from today's special purpose grants towards the upgrade of public toilet works in Mataranka, Borroloola and Bulman.
Victoria Daly will receive $126,750 to purchase a new tractor fitted with a front-end loader and slasher for the Yarralin community.
Plant and equipment, building improvements, fencing, construction works and IT upgrades are amongst infrastructure and services that will be funded by the latest round of funding.
The program offers local government councils the opportunity to improve community infrastructure and delivery outcomes.
More than $1.95 million has been invested into the latest round of the biannual grants with priority given to councils with limited revenue raising abilities.
Local Government, Housing and Community Development Minister Gerry McCarthy said: "The scope for local government and municipal councils to deliver essential infrastructure and services across the Territory will be boosted by these grants.
"Regional and remote councils with lower rate bases, will benefit the most from these grants.
"By increasing the capacity and sustainability of local governing bodies, we are extending opportunities for job creation which is the Government's number one priority."
