Photos of the signs bent flat to the ground or missing completely were posted on the Ringers of the Top End Facebook page on Monday, January 14.
However it is unclear if this was an act of vandalism or a vicious storm that destroyed the signs on the Queensland and Northern Territory border that greet travellers from state to state.
Craig Gordon commented on the photo saying "Don't think it was a storm. I went through there on 6th January. NT sign pulled east, QLD pulled west. Both in the direction of the carpark areas."
Meanwhile a local believes it was a storm.
"It was a storm I work at Rocklands (station) which surrounds Camooweal drive past the signs everyday. The new Welcome to NT sign that was put up in October, we found it three kilometres away," Paul McGrath said.
Katie Marie Thwaite said "That's gotta be a big wind, them post are strong as, I install them.
"Also that sign n brackets look near new very shiny costs a lot of money to install signs that big, sadly for the local town has to pay."
Mount Isa Police said there was no reports of the incident on their system.
