The girlfriend of a Sydney restaurateur who fell 25 metres from a balcony last month is "speechless" after $60,000 was raised at a benefit yesterday to pay for his rehabilitation costs, a friend says.
The fundraiser at the Cargo Lounge last night, which included the sale of about 300 $80 entrance tickets, a raffle of 200 items and bar sales, went close to the total target amount of $75,000 to $100,000, organiser Clint Hillery said.
"We still have quite a bit of sponsored stuff, so we could organise another fundraiser for Mikee down the road," he said.
"And a lot of people are still donating online."
Mikee Collins was severely injured after the fall from the Darling Point unit on December 19, but has been recovering well. He remains at St Vincent's Hospital and is now talking again.
His girlfriend, Shaneez Johnston, told Mr Hillery yesterday "she did not know how to thank people enough".
"She was speechless. She was very upset - but in a good way."
Mr Hillery said Mr Collins was "very overwhelmed" by the support he has receivedfrom friends and colleagues in the hospitality industry.
Mr Collins is the owner of Pyrmont restaurant the Alira Moorish Food and Wine Bar.
He previously worked at Rockpool and Ash St Cellar.
