A MAN allegedly spat in the face of a police officer during an arrest in Hargreaves Mall this morning. The arrest was in relation to several alleged thefts and a burglary in Long Gully in the early hours of this morning. Sergeant Tony Commadeur said several offenders broke into a car in Long Gully and stole items, including a credit card. They then allegedly broke into the Long Gully Post Office where they stole a small amount of cash, chocolate and an undelivered parcel. Sergeant Commadeur said the owner of the credit card received information from their bank that the card was being used in Hargreaves Mall, so a number of police officers were sent to the area about 11.15am. “Members went to the mall and located the offenders,” he said. “One was causing grief and assaulted a member during the arrest.” Witnesses at the scene told the Bendigo Advertiser the man spat in the face of a police officer. The officer was seen running water over his face. Sergeant Commadeur confirmed the offender allegedly spat at the officer. Two people were arrested at the scene and taken to Bendigo Police Station for questioning. A third person was arrested in Long Gully this morning.
