Japanese bombers dropped between 80 and 90 bombs on the NT outback town in March 1942, killing one man but changing the town forever.
Many speakers at last week’s ceremony held at the Katherine Museum, home to the town’s airfield which was the subject of the attack, remarked on the transformation of a town of about 300 people to today’s fourth largest settlement in the NT with more than 10,000 people.
The dramatic military flourishes were the obvious highlights of the ceremony with a speedy flypast of a FA/18 Super Hornet from the Tindal RAAF Base.
Military vehicles from today and yesteryear were on display accompanied by a large contingent from Tindal itself at the ceremony.
A slice of the war came to life with the firing of blanks (we hope they were) from a machine gun and the eerie sounding of an air siren.
