The announcement was made in Katherine this afternoon by NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner.
The $5m promised for the police station revamp will instead help fund the $8m for the fire station, which will be built opposite the yet-to-be-built St John Ambulance station and opposite the police headquarters on the Stuart Highway.
Mr Gunner said the new fire station would give the police extra room to expand into their existing facility.
“The funding announcement is a better and different solution than the government’s original $5m promise to upgrade the existing police and fire station, instead creating a precinct that will encompass a new fire station next to the newly relocated St John Ambulance.”
St John Ambulance hopes to move into its new station within the next few months.
Mr Gunner said design would begin immediately with the building expected to be ready by the end of next year.
He said the government would go “above and beyond” our election commitment of $5m to refurbish and expand the Katherine police and fire facility.
He said the new fire station would increase operational efficiency by providing a contemporary design that aligns to modern firefighting needs.
He said the project included the option of constructing a $1.6m heavy vehicle highway crossover.
“Relocation of the fire station will also provide faster and safer access to the Stuart Highway for emergency vehicles.
“We have already started concept development and will release the design tender next month.”
