It is a ground-breaking works program in many ways, one of the first to resume control of street lights from the NT Government (others will follow) and using new LED lights which promise almost 10 times the coverage.
Work crews gathered in Campbell Terrace, near the showgrounds, this morning to begin the handover of responsibilities.
There are 855 town lights to be changed over during the next six weeks.
Each light takes about 15 minutes to swap over to the new, ultra-bright LED technology.
The replacement of the lights is being financed by the NT Government and although Katherine Town Council now assumes responsibility for their repair, the new lights are much more durable and expected to much longer lasting.
