CareFlight, who operates the Top End Medical Retrieval Service on behalf of the Northern Territory Government, tasked the CareFlight Top End Rescue Helicopter and a CareFlight King Air turbo-prop aircraft to Jabiru, each with a flight doctor and flight nurse on board.
Jabiru Clinic staff, NT Police, Northern Territory Fire and Rescue crews from Jabiru, an off-duty Emergency Department doctor from Victoria and an off-duty CareFlight crewman provided initial treatment to the two men.
The 23-year-old driver was transported to Jabiru airstrip by St John Ambulance and Jabiru Clinic staff, where he was met by a CareFlight doctor and flight nurse on board a King Air turbo-prop aircraft.
He suffered suspected back and leg injuries, and arrived in Darwin at 7pm in a stable condition.
The 26-year-old passenger, who suffered suspected head, chest, spinal and abdomen injuries, was transported to a nearby quarry by Jabiru Clinic staff where the CareFlight Top End Rescue Helicopter had landed.
He was airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.
CareFlight crews praised the efforts of all first responders and Jabiru Clinic staff at the scene.
