Deputy Opposition leader, Lia Finocchiaro, said residents of Katherine are understandably concerned about water contamination and there is a clear demand from the community for voluntary testing.
“The Territory Government should listen to the wishes of Katherine residents and immediately offer voluntary blood tests,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.
Katherine MLA Sandra Nelson is petitioning the Federal Government to roll out health packages for Katherine.
“The very clear message out of Katherine is that residents want to be tested and Government should act on this,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.
“The Northern Territory Department of Health has the capacity to conduct tests and the costs can be passed on to the Department of Defence.
“It isn’t fair that residents concerned about contamination should be forced to wait for the Territory and Commonwealth governments to agree on a testing regime when there is capacity for testing now!
“The Opposition will continue to lobby the Territory and Commonwealth governments to provide concerned Katherine residents with the services and support they deserve at this time.”
