Katherine police have last week charged two youths over the alleged rape and assault of the two backpackers at the Katherine Visitor Information Centre in August.
Police said the young women, aged 20 and 26, were sleeping in their vehicle at the centre after their car broke down.
Family members have spoken to the Katherine Times after they travelled out from Germany to be with their children after the alleged assault.
One of the girls’ fathers, who we have chosen not to identify, said they took the two girls to the east coast of Australia to recuperate from their ordeal.
“They decided to continue their trip in Australia,” the father said.
“We changed things inside the van to try to remove bad memories and flew back to Germany.
“They are travelling around Australia’s east coast,” he said.
“Returning to Germany would have been a defeat.”
