Headspace provides 12-25-year-olds with early intervention mental health services, along with assistance in promoting young peoples’ well-being. 

NT Senator Nigel Scullion announced $830,000 funding for headspace in July

Mr Scullion said funding would be ongoing. 

“Investing in a headspace is like building a hospital,” he said. 

Northern Territory Primary Health Network is leading the tender process. 

“Young people in and around Katherine are underserviced by mental health services, and the new Katherine headspace service is being developed to support young people with the early detection, prevention and treatment of mental ill-health,” a NT PHN spokeswoman said. 

“Mental ill-health affects one in four young people aged 12-24 year olds every year. Yet young people are almost half as likely to visit a doctor for a mental health related matter.

“The Katherine headspace centre will provide a youth-friendly environment and services designed to support young people improve their mental health.

“At the completion of the EOI process a successful ‘lead agency’ organisation will be commissioned to design and operate the Katherine headspace centre,” she said. 

NT PHN CEO Nicki Herriot said young people residing outside major cities are at increased risk of developing mental health issues

“NT PHN has assessed the Katherine region’s mental health needs and has identified a real need for increased and targeted services for youth mental health and wellbeing,” Ms Herriot said. 

“We are delighted to be commissioning services for the young people of Katherine.

“We thank the Katherine community for their engagement with our team throughout this process. We look forward to continuing to engage with the Katherine community to ensure they have the opportunity to stay informed and engaged with the process,” she said. 

 Katherine is one of 10 new headspace sites announced for regional Australia and is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the PHN Program.
