Shepherdson College, Yirrkala School and Ramingining School have recycled items like computers, monitors, batteries, mobile phones and used toner and ink cartridges.
The effort resulted in the palleting, wrapping and removal of about:
- 108 laptops
- 35 desktop computers
- More than 45 printers
- 3 monitors
- 5 hard drives
- 2 servers
- 35kg of computer cables
- UPS (uninterruptible power supply)
Gapuwiyak School is all prepped with three pallets of e-waste ready for collection next week.
Recyclable materials from nine remote communities will be shipped to Darwin via Sea Swifts regular barge services at no cost for the next two years.
“This relationship enables Council to focus on improving environmental management of our landfill operations and creating a more sustainable future for this generation and for generations to come,” a council spokeswoman said.
East Arnhem Regional Council president Banambi Wunungmurra said he was is excited about the increase recycling efforts across the region.
“I’m extremely proud of the work we at Council are doing to reduce the ecological footprint on our nine communities,” Mr Wunungmurra said.
“Partnerships like these with Sea Swift and schools play a big role in assisting council to recycle the past to preserve our communities and the environments future.”
