Neighbourhood Watch NT are urging residents to stay vigilant while they enjoy the holiday season.
President Jenny Malone said whether you are taking a break or relaxing at home, we encourage residents to remain vigilant and take the necessary measures to reduce the incidences of opportunistic crime.
“There are some really simple steps that every Territorian can take to protect themselves, and their property,” Ms Malone said.
“Thieves will look for tell-tale signs that people are away, like bins not out on rubbish collection days, overflowing mailboxes, and unkempt lawns.
“If you are lucky enough to be going away over the holidays ask your friends or neighbours to lend a hand. This one small thing could make all the difference to your Christmas.”
Ms Malone also cautioned residents about posting holiday snaps on social media.
“It’s often tempting to share your holiday snaps and plans on social media pages, but this could be an open invite to thieves,” she said.
“As if a burglary isn’t bad enough, if you gave out too much information publicly online it may also affect any insurance claims.”
Ms Malone also suggested that you if are staying home this Christmas keep all gift packaging out of sight.
“Leaving empty boxes outside in plain sight is likely to advertise to thieves that you got a new bike, phone, TV tablet etc,” Ms Malone said.
“With the Festive spirit running high we ask Territorians to remember to lock it or lose it even when you are at home - don’t be an easy target.”
If you are heading out of town this Christmas you can register your absence with Katherine police.
