Acting Superintendent David Hamlyn said police were investigating reports the man was assisted by friends and is no longer in the river.
The man jumped into the river near Binjari community, approximately 12 kilometres south-west of Katherine, at about 10.30 yesterday morning.
A search and rescue mission began after police lost sight of him in the river due to the amount of foliage in and around the riverbank.
Only last week a Binjari council worker spotted a saltwater crocodile near where the man entered the water.
“Police are requesting anyone with information to come forward,” acting supt Hamlyn said.
“The male is urged to hand himself in to police. The search will resume if these reports prove unfounded.”
The matter is being investigated as a serious custody incident.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
