One of the units has been operating at the Katherine Shopping Centre carpark for several months.
Northern Territory Police and the City of Darwin rolled out five new high definition, mobile CCTV units today.
The units are a useful tool for combating antisocial behaviour in known hotspots and add an extra layer of protection to businesses that may face security risks, a police spokeswoman said.
The new cameras also assist with public safety during major public events. They will use the latest technology to provide clear images in high definition.
“These mobile units will assist in various aspects of policing including prevention, investigation, response and resolution of incidents,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Grant Nicholls said.
“Police will be able to take advantage of modern technology to assist in the identification of offenders, monitor antisocial behaviour and reduce victimisations.”
“The cameras will also serve as another resource in preventing criminal behaviour before it happens, and intervening when medical emergencies occur.”
“The expanded resources will allow police to continue to work towards a safer community, meeting the needs of the community,” he said.
The new units, secured by the City of Darwin through a $635,000 Commonwealth Government’s Safer Communities Fund grant, will be deployed in Darwin and Palmerston. This is in addition to the five units NT Police have already deployed throughout the Territory.
The new units will be put to use during the upcoming Queen’s Baton Relay.
