Katherine Town Council took the preventative action today.

Giles Street, between Third and Fourth streets, has been “cordoned off for an indefinite period of time”, a council spokeswoman said.

“This closure is due to the large number of Flying Foxes which have roosted in the trees along this section of path.”

The flying foxes take roost in the Katherine region each year and depending on where they roost they can cause disturbance, noise and nuisance to the community.

Because the little red flying foxes are native animals they come under the control of NT Parks and Wildlife.

“As is the case every year, the bats will move on … once they have exhausted the local food supplies,” NT Parks has previously advised.

Katherine Town Council has also reminded residents that the Low Level Crossing, Knotts Crossing River Reserve, the Katherine Hot Springs and the public boat ramp remain closed to the public because of the high river..
