Last week the NT Government announced an extra 75 police auxiliaries to be trained as liquor inspectors and stationed in front of bottle shops.
The announcement comes in response to the recently released Riley Review which recommended the continuation of POSIs (Point of sale Intervention) in regional centres.
This announcement will form part of the NT Governments plan to stop alcohol-fuelled violence in the NT.
Of the 75 Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors 22 have been earmarked for Katherine.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner has confirmed the 75 Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors will be in addition to the 120 extra police already promised during the current term of Government.
Katherine Mayor, Fay Miller, has been an outspoken advocate for addressing alcohol related issues in Katherine and a strong supporter of the TBLs (Temporary Beat Locations) since their implementation in December 2014.
“It is a relief to see positive steps being implemented,” Mayor Miller said.
“While POSI’s are not the only answer to reducing alcohol fuelled violence in the Northern Territory, it is obvious they have certainly made a significant improvement to the behaviour in Katherine.
“Katherine Town Council commends the leadership shown by the Gunner Government in addressing this critical matter and look forward to continued improvements in community safety and wellbeing.”
