The play is the latest work from Reg Cribb, the multi-award winning screenwriter of Last Cab to Darwin.

Featuring indigenous actor Bjorn Stewart (Black Comedy, Last Drinks at Frida’s), Francesca Savige (Romeo and Juliet, The Importance of Being Earnest) and Grant Cartwright (Restoration, Australia: The Story of Us), Thomas Murray and the Upside Down River is an Australian story about love, family secrets and the land. 

Director, Chris Bendall said the performance will appeal to everyone looking to connect with a uniquely Australian story.

"Some plays stay with you, and you just can’t let them go,” he said. 

“The journey of Thomas Murray is one through not only his own family’s past but our broader collective history.

“As much as this is a play about dealing with one man’s past it is also very much about our country’s present and about our relationship with the land,” Mr Bendall said.

The play centres on Thomas Murray, whose family has been farming the land along the Darling River for five generations.

When his childhood friends Lucy and Billy reappear, friendships are tested, secrets, long buried, are awakened, and Thomas must make the journey down-stream to reconcile past wrongs and to fight for his wife.

Thomas Murray and the Upside Down River is playing at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre next Saturday, April 7 at 8pm.
