Brothers-in-law Steve O’Conner and Geoff Willett along with their wives Gill and Beth have been on the road for about a month in their caravan, which they say has more merit than a camper van.
“With a caravan, you can unhook your car and drive away in seconds… Can’t do that with a camper van, can you,” Mr Willett said.
Starting in Maitland, NSW, the couples have travelled to the top of NT and are now on their way to Broome.
A stop in Katherine was mandatory, they said, even though they’d visited recently.
Self professed “placid travellers”, the couples are not doing much in Katherine this trip, other than getting the caravans looked at.
“We went fishing in the Katherine River and we were really hoping to see a big croc,” Mr Willett said.
“We didn’t catch a fish and we didn’t see a croc.”
But the couples are happy nonetheless.
The four retirees have travelled together before, and “so far there have been no punch ups,” Mr Willett said.
The only slight annoyance is their little companions.
“The little dogs can be a bit of a pain, but we love them and couldn’t leave them at home,” Mr O’Conner said.
“They stop us from going into the national parks, but they’re worth it,” he said.
