This is a major milestone in the government’s election promise to develop Katherine as an agribusiness and logistics hub.
Minister for Primary Industry and Resources Ken Vowles, made the trip to Katherine to make the announcement.
“It’s excellent to be in Katherine today.
“We see Katherine as an important economic part of the NT.
“The plan is to see local produce on shelves here and on shelves all over the world,” he said.
The role, which is funded by the NT Government through a $1.55 million grant to NT Farmers, will see the newly appointed Andrew Philip help growers access new markets, diversify crops and improve farming practices to create more jobs.
Coming from an agricultural business development background with well-established supply chain contacts throughout the Australasian, Middle East and Asian regions, Mr Philip was also previously a mango farmer in Bundaberg, Queensland.
“The biggest issues I’m seeing right now are profitable markets.
“There is a major market – cattle – with great potential and great potential to expand the fodder market.
“I have a real passion for agricultural development and am looking forward to bringing my expertise to the Territory.
“The Katherine agricultural sector in particular has plenty of potential for growth,” Mr Philip said.
The funding has also allowed NT Farmers to appoint a Mango Industry Business Development Officer and a Workforce Planning Co-ordinator.
NT Farmers CEO, Greg Owens, said the three roles will prove invaluable to the sector.
“Having three such skilled, qualified people on board at NT Farmers will really help grow and support the horticultural industry,” Mr Owens said.
