The NTPA said today’s announcement of a new 24-hour station in Nightcliff came with no consultation with the association.
“The NTPA is concerned remote stations have once-again been ignored.
“Members in some remote areas are still working out of shipping containers, while a new 24-hour police station is promised for Nightcliff, when Casuarina station and a fully-functioning 24-hour police station in Darwin city are just down the road,” Mr McCue said.
Mr McCue said the association welcomes the government’s recognition that the current Nightcliff police station is outdated and in need of replacement, but says building a police station in the middle of a residential area will present unique challenges.
“Without seeing concept drawings or designs it’s difficult to see whether these challenges, including significant security issues will be addressed.
“We also note there’s no indication of extra police numbers to resource the new station. Current staffing levels are inadequate to run a 24-hour station, where are the extra officers coming from to make it viable?”
The government today announced it was spending $45 million on a major redevelopment of John Stokes Square in Nightcliff – including a 24-hour police station.
Member for Nightcliff Natasha Fyles said Nightcliff residents and businesses want and deserve safe communities.
“John Stokes Square, opposite the Nightcliff Village, is nearing the end of its economic life and has long been a hot spot for crime and anti-social behaviour.”
