Two weeks early, Matilda Mackenzie Bell was born at 4.36am on April 18.
Moving here four years ago from Brisbane, the couple said they chose to live in Katherine after falling in love with the landscape and wonderful people.
“There are lots of young families and young professionals here in Katherine.
“Everyone pitches in to help out. It is a close nit, supportive environment.
“We have no plans to go anywhere,” Mrs Bell said.
Matilda was born on a very busy night, with five babies born over just two days.
But the Katherine Hospital’s great reputation had the couple at ease.
“The midwives were absolutely fantastic. It was such a busy night, but the strain and stress wasn’t visible to us at all. It was big smiles all around,” the couple said.
“We have found that friends actively seek out to have their baby at Katherine Hospital.
“For a first time parent it was a great experience, there was lots of education. The midwifes taught us about breastfeeding, bathing and helped when Matilda was crying.
“We stayed for five days whereas a big city hospital kicks you out so quickly,” Mr Bell said.
With the abundance of young families opting to raise children in Katherine, there are many community programs to assist new parents and Mr and Mrs Bell are looking forward to getting involved.
