Long planned for Alice Springs, the actual location of the proposed gallery has caused controversy.
The NT Government yesterday confirmed Katherine Mayor Fay Miller and Katherine MLA Sandra Nelson had offered Katherine as the location for the gallery.
But a spokesman for Chief Minister Michael Gunner said there were no plans to move it from Alice Springs.
“While we appreciate their interest, the Territory Government believes Alice Springs is the rightful home for the Gallery and we need to give it a proper crack there.,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman said Katherine’s leaders understand this project is planned for Alice Springs but had seen an opportunity and want to discuss the benefits of building it in their town.
“The Gallery will create hundreds of jobs, attract thousands of tourists a year and the Government has made an initial $50 million down-payment on this major project.”
The spokesman also said it had been an election promise for Alice Springs.
