After 18 months in a difficult position, Dr Fairchild said he had had decided “for a variety of reasons” to semi-retire from the public sector.
His retirement is effective as from today.
Dan Murtas, the former principal of Katherine South Primary and assistant regional director for the Katherine region, will act as Principal until the end of this term.
Dr Fairchild famously was involved in a melee at the school back in February when he was grabbed by a student during an “incident” at the school.
Dr Fairchild was attempting to break-up a fight at the school when he became involved.
In announcing his retirement this week, Dr Fairchild said he had the privilege of being part of the visit to Tindal Air Base last week to participate in the “Try a Trade Day”.
Contractors LendLease were the hosts for the event and as part of the event the school signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the company and the school.
“This will give our students a range of different opportunities, many leading to full time work options,” he said.
“It is events like this that have made being the principal such a great experience.
“Year 12 results, the richness of the extra curricular program including sport and excursions, the Student Leadership Council, inclusivity, staff and students generally have all added to the vibrancy.
“As an ex-Principal of the school recently commented to me “Katherine High School is arguably the most complex and challenging of schools in the Northern Territory”.
Dr Fairchild is moving back to South Australia.
