Did you know there’s another piece of Jesus-related graffiti on our bridge? – ‘Christ is the conquerer’.
I believe the message – but it’s ridiculously obscure to anyone but insiders.
If you’ll indulge me, I want to rant about one of my pet peeves: the way Christians talk.
I wonder if you’ve encountered Christian-ese. I want to say sorry to you for when Christians are not clear. Language changes and it’s like they haven’t noticed.
Like the word ‘Lord’ – which conjures up images of feudal England (and a certain former prime minister, I might add). Let’s just say ‘boss’.
Or the word ‘blessed’ – it makes me think of sneezing, and perhaps the Black Death. Can we just say ‘privileged’.
Don’t get me started on using words that were abandoned in speech centuries ago.
And while we’re at it, let’s replace ‘faith’ with ‘trust’, and ‘sin’ with ‘crime against God’.
Now back to ‘Christ is the conquerer’. I don’t know what the original ‘artist’ intended. But here’s an attempt: God’s chosen boss Jesus wins against God’s enemies. An odd choice for illegal graffiti.
I’m convinced Christians have a message worth sharing. So when a Christian says something obscure, just say “please explain”. And maybe we’ll all get the message.
