Ms Uibo’s appointment comes as the Government nears its two year mark in office, and will build on the Government’s work to deliver on its priorities to create jobs, invest in children and restore trust in Government.
This will mean a reshuffle in the Cabinet and Ms Uibo’s portfolio position is not yet clear.
She has an office in Katherine.
“Territorians deserve a stable Government that listens and takes action, and puts Territorians first,” Mr Gunner said.
“Nearing the half way mark of this term of Government, every member of my team remains focused on improving the lives of Territorians.
“Now is the right time to assess how we can continue to progress our large reform agenda – to create the generational change desperately needed right across the Territory, to create more jobs, to attract more people to the Territory – and to do so in a way that creates confidence and stability for our community and our economy.
“Unlike the previous CLP Government who oversaw unprecedented instability in Territory politics, undertook reshuffle after reshuffle and were full of self-interest, the Territory Labor Government will continue to put Territorians first.
“Selena will be an exceptional addition to my Cabinet.
“Her strong background in remote Aboriginal education and her work empowering youth as future leaders means an even stronger voice in Cabinet that is representative of Territorians, their aspirations and hopes.”
Ms Uibo has strong family connections to Nunggubuyu and Wanindilyakwa in Groote Eylandt, and has spent many years teaching in the Territory – including four years at Numbulwar school – following completion of her Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education dual degree.
“I look forward to advocating for all Territorians in my role as Minister, and continuing to work with the Gunner team towards our shared vision to improve the lives of all Territorians,” Ms Uibo.
