About 30 cemetery sites at the Katherine Memorial Cemetery were vandalised over the weekend.

Ornaments were smashed into small pieces and flowers destroyed.

Unfortunately, the damage to ornaments was so extensive, they were beyond repair, and have been removed.

“That is was an appalling, senseless and insensitive act, and our hearts go out to the families affected," Mayor Fay Miller said.

The vandalism was discovered by council staff undertaking the daily inspection and maintenance of the cemetery grounds.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious or unlawful behaviour, including people being in the cemetery grounds between sunset and sunrise, to the police.

If anyone has information on the vandalism contact police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
