Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Services responded to a report of a structure fire on the corner of South and Thompson streets about 9.50pm.
Officer in Charge of the Tennant Creek Fire and Rescue Station, Tex Tourell said the blaze destroyed the home, three sheds, four caravans and three cars.
“By the time we arrived on scene, the fire had spread to an outside structure adjacent to the main house. We conducted a search of the house and thankfully it was vacant, but due to the intensity of the fire and venting of multiple LPG cylinders in the area, fire crews were forced to fight the fire from the street.
“This is a timely reminder to everyone to ensure they have fire-proofed their property. Something that starts as a grass fire can quickly run into unmaintained yards and destroy structures.
“The premises did not have working smoke detectors installed, which may have raised the alarm earlier.”
Detective Acting Sergeant of the Tennant Creek Investigation Unit, Karl Gundersen said a man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
Investigations continue and Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
