Opened just today for Casuarina Street Primary School’s 20^th birthday, the playground is a product of young student’s imaginations. 

“There is nothing else like it in Katherine,” McCoys Garden Engineering owner Duane McCoy said. 

Built in just four weeks by the engineering team, Mr McCoy said: “It is a very unusual playground, it is old school brought back to life with a real natural look.” 

“We have given them lots of hidey-holes and sand to play with, plants; it is a sensory type thing,” Mr McCoy said. 

“The kids can touch, smell, feel… the more you give them the more they learn,” he said. 

The design stems from ideas put forth by the kids, project manager Rashmi Sharma said.

“They wanted to be able to climb, play with sand and have somewhere shady to sit and spend time together,” she said. 

The management team took on board the ideas and designed a functional playground for pre-school students through to year one students. 

Casuarina Street Primary School principal John Cleary opened the new playground today before at least 100 excited students and their teachers. 

The playground is part of an area which has undergone a lot of recent work. 

“Kris Bitz, one of our board members really lead the work from turning the kid’s ideas into a playground,” Mr Cleary said. 

“The playground is a product of our community right from the kid’s ideas through to the community actually building it,” he said. 

Celebrations today included the playground opening, a picnic lunch and a fun colour run.
