With three wins under his belt, Darwin jockey Wayne Davis was elated to also be awarded with Jockey of the Day.
“It has been an amazing day, from the riders point of view to get three winners as well as winning the Katherine Cup… well there will be a party in Katherine tonight,” he said.
Riding Grand Teton in the last race and coming first was an unexpected highlight of the day, Mr Davis said.
Darwin trainer of the champion horse, Garry Lefoe said despite some bad luck in Darwin prior to the Katherine Cup, both Grand Teton and Wayne Davis put in enormous effort to bring it home.
“It is absolutely awesome to win today, we were not expecting it.
“Thanks to the Katherine Club and Wayne Davis who put on a terrific ride,” he said.
It was a close race, with Grand Teton beating Kifaah in second place ridden by Richie Oakford, and Spartan Eagle in third place ridden by Vanessa Arnott.
