The floor levels of more than 300 high risk dwellings in Katherine North and South have been measured in relation to the river height. 

A sub project of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL) Works Plan, the new floor level surveys will provide residents with information of potential risk in a flood situation.  

“Currently we can see where water goes in a flood, we can see how deep it gets and now with these new surveys we will be able to see which homes will be effected depending on how high they are off the ground,” DIPL regional director of infrastructure for the Katherine region Phil Harris said. 

Contractors are in the middle of surveying 1300 more dwellings in Katherine, with the project costing $400,000, DIPL regional director of north lands and planning Claire Brown said. 

She said the surveys should be completed and compiled in a report by September this year. 

“One of the risks of buying property in Katherine is buying in a flood zone,” Mr Harris said. 

“These surveys will refine our knowledge and provide reassurances that people’s homes are out of harms way.” 

The surveys will also aid in assisting police evacuations in the case of a flood. 

“The police will be able to use the information to evacuate the at-risk parts of town,” Mr Harris said. 

“Residents will also know at what stage to start implementing their flood plan,” he said. 

The floor level surveys are part of the Katherine Flood Mitigation Advisory Committee’s recommendations.
