Ned Noel Humphries was born on Monday at 11.10pm, and for first time Katherine parents, holding the baby was an exciting new experience.
“The past few days have been the biggest learning curve,” new dad Grady Humphries said.
“Neither of us have ever held a new born baby before.
“We don’t have young cousins or nieces or nephews in the family,” he said.
But Tara Humphries said she has adapted quickly to being a mother.
“It feels like we have been doing it for years, this maternal instinct kicks in, it has just been amazing,” she said.
“We couldn’t have done it without the midwifes here, even though we’ve been pressing the green button 100 times asking a million questions, they have just been great.”
Ms Humphries’ waters broke in the early hours of Monday morning, while feeding their fussy cat.
With bags packed and ready to go, the couple said there was no rush to get to the hospital.
And after a long labour, which ended in emergency caesarean, family in South Australia finally received the exciting news.
“This is the first grandchild for both sides of the family,” Tara’s mother Annette Nielsen said.
“The whole family has been waiting patiently for this very news. Everyone is very excited,” she said.
