The Katherine region will benefit from the installation of CCTV cameras and lighting at community facilities to tackle anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the community, Senator Nigel Scullion, and CLP Candidate for Lingiari, Jacinta Price, have announced.
“This is terrific news for Katherine residents who will benefit from the Federal Government’s continued commitment to keeping Australians safe and secure with funding of $85,902 for three projects in the Katherine region,” Senator Scullion said.
Ms Price said Wurli Wurlinjang Aboriginal Corporation has received two Safer Communities grants totalling $75,445.
“Wurli Wurlinjang Health Service will improve security across all Wurli Katherine premises with a grant of $47,634,” she said.
“ Improvements will include the installation of dark spot sensor lighting, extension of security system and front gate upgrades at their Main Clinic, as well installation of security systems at the Women and Children’s Centre and the at the Chronic Disease Clinic.
“The improved security measures addresses environmental conditions such as dark spots, easy access to premises and lack of electronic security systems while deterring criminal activity occurring in community infrastructure,” Ms Price said.
“Wurli’s $27,811 Binjari Health Clinic Security Upgrade Project will see the improvement of security measures at the health clinic in the Binjari Community.
“The aim of the security improvements is to address the regular instances of graffiti occurring on the exterior walls of the clinic and instances of anti-social behaviour occurring on the premises after clinic opening hours.
“The improvements will include the upgrade of the perimeter fencing, the purchase and installation of a security system and the purchase and installation of external sensor lighting.”
Senator Scullion said Katherine Horse and Pony Club has received a grant of $10,457 to install security cameras and lighting to reduce property damage and increase the safety of members.
“The Katherine Horse and Pony Club plays a big part in the community and has been teaching young riders from across the Katherine region for over 40 years,” he said.
“In recent times the club has been broken into and equipment stolen or destroyed.
Security cameras will assist in the reduction of break-ins and the identification of uninvited visitors.
“Solar lighting in the parking area and security lighting at the club house will reduce the number of uninvited visitors undertaking anti-social behaviour such as defecating near amenities; and increase the safety of members in the parking area which is utilised by predominately female members,” Senator Scullion said.
“CCTV cameras have shown to be an effective crime prevention measure and a valuable investigative tool that provides a deterrence to anti-social behaviour.
“This funding has been delivered under Round 2 of the Coalition’s Safer Communities Fund.”
Senator Scullion said the Safer Communities Fund is a CLP commitment to keep Territorians safe and secure by enhancing the efforts of local councils and community organisations to address crime and antisocial behaviour.
