The heavily laden road train came undone at the Low Level Crossing in Katherine last night.
The crossing remains closed and Katherine Town Council says it will stay that way until at least lunchtime tomorrow..
An excavator managed to lighten the load on one of three trailers of cow pellets as attempts continued this morning to remove the road train.
Sources at the scene claim the road train is rated at 100 tonnes in weight while the crossing is signposted for 20 tonnes.
The road train had entered the crossing from the northern side heading towards the Victoria Highway when it came unstuck.
The road train successful negotiated the crossing but was not able to climb the hill.
The road has been damaged in the process as well.
