The $8.5 million project will see the Katherine region better serviced with a new modern fire and emergency services facility, while creating more jobs.
A tender was awarded to C&R Construction, a Darwin based construction company, in July to carry out the works; the same company contracted to build the Katherine ambulance station.
The site is moving rapidly with about 240 tradies working together on the project.
The project was announced by Chief Minister Michael Gunner in Katherine in April last year.
The Government had previously promised $5 million to ease chronic overcrowding at the police station.
Mr Gunner said more than $8 million would be provided to relocate the fire station, basically across the Stuart Highway adjacent to the ambulance station.
The new single level facility will:
- accommodate fire crew/staff and be available for after hours use by volunteers;
- provide a venue for training;
- offer a workspace for vehicles and safety equipment;
- provide shelter for fire fleet on standby; and
- allow for further expansion to enable the facility to service the community into the future.
Construction of the new facility is anticipated to be completed in early-2019 and once operational the station will be managed by the NT Fire and Emergency Department.
