Some residents have been left feeling fearful after their businesses were ransacked. 

A police task force was formed on Monday to carry out detailed investigations into the 10 or more Katherine businesses which were hit by thieves.  

Central Investigations detectives have now arrested three teens alleged to have been involved in the town-wide spree. 

Offices across Katherine, including the town’s only private medical practice, were trashed and raided. 

In most cases, large amounts of money was stolen and CCTV cameras were damaged. 

Police have arrested two 16-year-old males and a 13-year-old male.

“Two were arrested yesterday and one was arrested today. Police have identified other persons of interest and are attempting to locate them,” officer in charge of Central Investigations Section, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jakson Evans said. 

“Further arrests are expected as investigations continue,” a NT Police spokeswoman said. 

Some residents described the break-ins as a “professional” level coordinated series of thefts, as well as an unwelcome disruption to business.

Among the businesses targeted in the crime spree were fuel stations, garages, a hairdresser, a community service group and engineering workshops as well as private property.

Katherine Police Station Acting Superintendent Dave Hamlyn on Monday said he was disappointed in the weekend’s events.  

“This is disappointing that some people feel they have the right to steal from hard working community members.

“As a result, additional officers from within the Katherine Division will be provided to Detectives to assist them with their investigations and to identify and prosecute those responsible for these crimes.”
