Just yesterday, a NT Police officer was assaulted during an arrest of a young male.
This sixth Alice Springs attack came after a spate of violent assaults against police officers on the ground in just over a week.
“Just after 1pm on Wednesday police arrested a 16-year-old male who had allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old female on South Terrace (Alice Springs).
“As police were taking the male into custody he is alleged to have kneed the police officer in the head,” a NT Police spokeswoman said.
“The injury caused swelling and bruising and the officer required medical assistance.
“The attack by a youth in Alice Springs continues to demonstrate the dangerous and unpredictable work police are dealing with at a time when summer is just around the corner,” she said.
NTPA president, Paul McCue said protecting those who protect the community was of significant importance.
“This is the sixth attack on one of our members in a little over a week in Alice Springs and was undertaken in a cowardly way by kneeing our member to the head as they undertook to protect a young female victim.
“We must protect those who protect our community, and this latest assault to one of our officers cannot be tolerated by the Commissioner, nor the government.
“The NTPA is calling on urgent action around this significant issue,” president Paul McCue said.
The 16-year-old male is scheduled to appear before the Alice Springs Local Youth Court on September 24.
According to the NT Police spokeswoman, the NTPA have begun discussions with the Attorney General about sentencing increases for assaults on police.
