More dietary information has been released, this time about fruit, vegetables and eggs.
Representatives from Defence, Coffee and other government organisations will be on hand today and tomorrow to answer questions about the environmental PFAS investigation.
The Community Shopfront is in replace of the usual Community Walk-in Sessions held by Defence.
Last week, Kalano Aboriginal Community was updated on PFAS food contamination following the NT Department of Health’s precautionary dietary advice to limit fish consumption.
With new information released this week, the shopfront is an opportunity for community members to ask targeted questions.
The Department of Defence has released new dietary information following the completion of the Human Health Risk Assessment.
More than 280 samples were taken from home-grown fruit and vegetables, eggs and livestock serum.
“The risk from home-grown fruit and vegetables watered with contaminated bore water is low, except for young children at high consumption levels,” the Department of Defence advice says.
“Eggs from poultry accumulate PFAS when chickens have contaminated soils, food or water in their diet.
“Frequent consumption of home-grown eggs where bore water has been used in and around zone 1 may result in elevated PFAS exposure. Eggs from poultry in other areas present a lower risk and do not need to be limited.”
Zone one is most of the Katherine township.
Last week, the Katherine Times release information about official dietary warnings to limit the consumption of fish from the Katherine river.
More warnings and dietary advice on the eating of locally grown fruit and vegetables, meat and eggs are expected to follow.
The Community Shopfront is operating today until 6pm and tomorrow from 10.30am to 6pm at shop four at the Woolworths Complex.
