MA is taking the unusual step of holding a public meeting in Katherine to discuss the future of the local competition.

The organisation says the local Katherine Off Road Motorcycle Sports Club no longer wants to be affiliated with them.

Motorcycling Australia is the peak body representing Motorcycle racing and recreational riding in Australia.

The Katherine club runs regular motocross events at its track off Bicentennial Road.

“We have had several meetings as a club and decided we no longer wanted to be affiliated with them,” a club spokesman said.

“We have been paying a lot of money to MA and don’t see anything for it.”

The spokesman said the club still maintained its track to MA standards and now had its own insurance cover.

“They (MA) are upset because they aren’t getting our money any more.”

MA Northern Territory have called a meeting at the Katherine Civic Centre for November 11.

“The Executive Members of MANT invite all current, past and future members of KORMSC; including and especially any person in the region interested in the sport of motorcycle racing and recreational riding to a public meeting to discuss future of Motorcycle sporting activities in the Katherine region,” a spokesman for MA said.

“This decision has significant impacts requiring discussion.

“This could potentially destroy the future of safe and fun racing and riding within the Katherine region.

“Would you please be able to share this information about the public meeting to gather as many Katherine residents possible; as it is their local club and should be decided by the residents that will impact the decision the most.”

The Katherine club said it had not been informed about the public meeting.

“I reckon it could be fairly hostile,” the club spokesman said.

“We have voted on this and will continue to vote on this every year at our annual meeting whether we want to be affiliated or not.

“We don’t see that we get anything out of all the money they want us to pay.”

The spokesman said he was not aware of the total amount paid to MA by the club and individual competitors but said it was in the thousands of dollars.

The local club has between 50 and 60 members, the spokesman said.
